A pencil original score showing melody lines with three verses and a chorus. Alma Mater for the College of Charleston written by Edward McCrady, Jr. (Class of 1927). A musical score with three verses and a chorus handwritten in pencil. Possibly written in response to a contest posted in "The College of Charleston Magazine" (Dec. 1934) sponsored by the Cliosophic Literary Society at the College of Charleston.

Abstract The African American Bell family of Charleston, South Carolina were descended from Sally (Sarah) Johnson, the matriarch of a free family of color who purchased 2 Green Street, circa 1844. In 1912, the property was willed to Hiram L. Bell (died 1952), a son of Jesse Miles DeReef and Holten L. George Detwiler Burges collection

Abstract

George Detwiler Burges graduated from the College of Charleston in 1938. He served as a B-17 pilot during World War II and was killed in action in 1944. This collection consists of Burges' personal papers, letters, military records, photographs, newspaper and magazine articles, and military decorations including the Purple Heart and Distinguished Flying Cross.
